Circular economy

Nexans Nordics Distribution & Usage (D&U)

12th April was Norway's "Overshoot Day" for 2023 - the day each year when the world starts borrowing from the resources of future generations. This day is coming earlier every year.

If everyone were to use as much resources as we do in Norway, we would need 3,6 clodes. It is easy to see that we, both locally and globally, have a significant problem with overconsumption that needs to be solved.

For Nexans Nordics Distribution & Usage's (D&U)  part, we work continuously with the 5 Rs - Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse and Renew. In this way, we endeavour to contribute to a reduced need for resources and a more circular economy.

You can read more about each of the five R's and how we work with them below:

We carefully and continuously assess our choice of materials and suppliers.

You can read more about how we follow up on our suppliers in the section on the Transparency Act.
>98% of our total purchases are covered by signed CSR-documents.

When it comes to materials, we take a proactive approach and closely monitor REACh, RoHS and conflict minerals.

Where the power standard allows, we reduce the amount of material.

In 2022, for example, we launched a new generation of heating cable, with far less weight, CO₂ emissions and energy input in production.

You can read more about it here.

The use of circular materials is essential to achieving NetZero in 2050. We have a concrete progress plan for increasing the recycling rate and the proportion of recycled materials in our cables, packaging and drums.

Already today, you can see that our packaging consists of recyclable materials and some consists of recycled materials. For example, all reels and end caps in our N-LINE box are made from 100% recycled plastic.

We have also already started to introduce recycled plastic and metal in our cables in a controlled manner and on a small scale. We are now working on scaling this up. Feel free to contact us if you want to know more about these projects

We try to come up with products and services that allow us to reuse materials. For example, we have a service called Tromløp where we take back certain cable drums, including cable residues, and repair them so that they can be used again and again.

Innovations that support and accelerate energy transition and sustainable electrification.

In the last two years (2023 and 2024), we have, among other things, launched a Nordic Swan Ecolabelled portfolio of cables in conduits and a more manageable halogen-free power cable.

DISCLAIMER: At Nexans, we acknowledge that sustainability and environmental protection can be complex and constantly evolving. We cannot claim to have all the knowledge, but we strive to stay updated, avoid greenwashing, continuously improve, and endeavor to do the right things based on the knowledge available to us today.
